Bonbook Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 8, 2026
Summary
Bonbook stores your reading so it can show it to you. We don't sell your data, we don't show ads and we don't track you across apps.
What data we store
What you log: books and their details (title, authors, pages, cover, collection), readings, sessions (date, duration and progress), ratings, favorite quotes, characters and words you note down, your conversations with the AI, your friends, the recommendations you send and receive, your book clubs, goals and settings such as the theme. From your Google account, your name, email and profile photo. With your account, the date on which you accepted these terms. If the app crashes, we store a technical error report (without what you type) to fix it; it is deleted after 90 days. We also store the days on which you open the app (only the date), to count how many people use it; they are deleted after 400 days.
Where it is stored
On your device and on a third party's cloud servers (in the United States), to sync it across your devices. No one else can read it, except what you share: your quotes with readers of the same book (if "Share my quotes" is on and the book isn't private), what your friends see, what you recommend (to a friend or in a club) and, without your name, the "Most read" count and the details of the books you add (title, author, ISBN and pages), which are shared in the catalog so other readers can find them.
Friends
Your friends see your Google name and photo, what you're reading and your progress, the books you finished with their rating and cover, your quotes and how many friends you have. They don't see your email, notes, characters, sessions, AI conversations or the books you mark as private (with their quotes). Outside of clubs, you can hide from each friend what you're reading, your finished books or your quotes, and mute them, without them being notified. Your friend code only lets people send you a request; you can change it, and remove, block or unblock someone whenever you want. When you block someone, neither of you sees the other's quotes. When someone accepts your friend request or your invitation to a club you manage, you get a notice in the app; it stays in "View activity" and is deleted after 90 days.
Recommendations and book clubs
When you recommend a book, the recipient sees your name and photo, the book and your note; you won't know if they added it. In a book club, members, even if they aren't your friends, see your name, your photo, your role in the club and the books you recommend with your note. If you join the club's reading of a book, they see how far along you are in it (in any edition), even if it's private or you hide what you're reading from a friend; if you don't join, they see nothing about that book, not even whether you have it. If the club has a goal, they see your progress toward it in its period (time, pages, sessions or finished books), without knowing which books. They don't see anything else from your library. A club's thumbnail and cover are only seen by its members and invitees, and are deleted with the club. If you are invited, until you accept only the club's administrator sees you. You can leave a club whenever you want and, if you manage it, delete it. If one person blocks the other, neither receives the other's recommendations, including those through a club, and each one leaves the clubs the other manages. If you delete your account, the books you recommended in a club stay on its list, without your name.
Most read
For "Most read" we count, without your name, the books you're reading. We only publish how many people are reading each book, never who, and your private books don't count.
Third-party services
For the app to work we use third-party services: Google, to sign in; cloud servers, to store and sync your data; book search services, which only receive the text or ISBN you search for, not your reading data; OpenAI, the artificial intelligence service behind "AI Analysis", only after you accept it (what it receives is described under "AI Analysis"); and OpenAI's automatic moderation, which reviews the covers you agree to share and what you share with others. Each one receives only what it needs to provide its service and protects your data at least as described in this policy.
AI Analysis
AI Analysis is a tool to analyze your books and chat about them with an artificial intelligence service from OpenAI. It only works after you accept the permission, which you can withdraw in Profile. We send it the book's title and author, your progress, your rating and reading time, the quotes, characters and words you added for that book, the other books in the series that you have, the text of the pages you photograph (the photo doesn't leave your phone: it's read on it) and the messages you write to it; it uses your account name to address you. We never send it your email or any other private information from your account.
What you write and share in the conversation is your responsibility: don't share personal or private information, yours or other people's. The service is made for analyzing books. We don't monitor your conversations: they are stored with your data so you can see your history and are deleted when you delete your account. The answers are generated by the AI and may contain errors.
Photos and camera
The camera is used to scan a book's barcode or a friend's QR code, to take a quote from a photo and to send "AI Analysis" the text of up to 3 pages per message; text recognition happens on your device and those photos aren't sent to any server (from the pages, only the text you choose goes to the AI). Your photos, when you upload a cover: it is stored with your data and your friends see it.
Shared covers
If you agree to share a cover you uploaded, other readers of that book will be able to choose it. Before that, we remove the photo's hidden data (such as location) and it is reviewed by an automatic moderation service. It is published without your name and stays even if you delete your account. Covers of private books are never shared. For each book we count which cover each reader chooses, without showing who: the most chosen one becomes the official one (an uploaded one, when 3 readers choose it).
Moderation
What you share with others (quotes, club names and images, and recommendation notes) is reviewed by an automatic moderation service before or shortly after it is published, and anything that breaks the rules isn't shown to others. Reports and suspensions are handled as described in the Terms of Use.
Suggested covers and reports
You can suggest a cover for a book you don't have. It goes through the same review, and people who have that book get a notice without your name: we store who suggested it and who received it, without showing it. Each report of a cover you suggested adds a mark to your account (we store who reported it, without showing it to you); with 3 marks from different people you can't suggest or share covers for 30 days, and if you delete your account during that time, the 30-day fingerprint remembers it. Notices are deleted after 90 days; marks, when you delete your account.
Your rights
You can edit or delete any book, session or quote in the app, choose what each friend sees, remove, block or unblock them, leave a club (or delete it, if you manage it), export your data and delete your account with all your data from Profile. When you delete it, we keep for 30 days an encrypted fingerprint of the account you signed in with (it doesn't reveal who you are), who had blocked you and how much you had already used of the daily limits and the monthly AI limit: if you come back during that time, they stay the same. After that it is deleted.
Children
Bonbook is not directed to children under 13.
